Welcome to my bunker!
If you came here to read my proposal, thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Please read on.
Most of you were probably not even aware of the fact as the Vietnam conflict wound down and on that April day, ended, that the military had no further use for such a large number of troops. They needed to drastically reduce the number of active troops from "13" divisions, down to just "8" To accomplish this they started giving any soldier that was deemed not suitable for the "new military", this choice to either "resign for the good of the service" or face harsh punishments. They wanted fresh soldiers, not those "tainted" by the things they saw and did. Many of these were given for minor infractions that would have normally been dealt with a slap on the hand.
True, many HAD gotten to the point where they had become confused about their mission there and because of hearing about the protesting back home and lack of support, and it did affect their moral and attitude. At the time the opportunity to be shipped back home "right away", and not be shot at anymore, was not that bad an idea. So very many took them up on that offer, not caring about the discharge stipulations, as they were never made clear at the time.
Over three-hundred-thousand combat veterans were tossed out into the streets with no help from any service agencies like the VFW or DAV, or benefits, like health care, even for those that had been wounded in combat. They were left to fend for themselves.
I have contacted as many people as I can think of with this proposal and I'm told it has even reached the Department of Defense, but I doubt they will even consider it unless there are more voices than mine behind it. There are some that would like to help, but most of them have no idea how. The ones that have tried have been bogged down with government red tape. I have come to believe that the only way I can accomplish this is with your voices echoing mine. It will only be accomplished if enough people get involved.
If you believe in these brave men that did serve their country even when it was not popular to do so, then start sending this link to everyone you know. post it on facebook. Help me let this country know that these Veterans of the Vietnam Conflict deserve to be made whole. I will be trying to set up a petition page on here and I hope to get at least a million signatures. That is only ten people sending it to ten other people and so on and that only needs to happen six times to reach a million. So, please keep checking back until I get it set up and thanks for your patience
An interesting point is that every United States citizen that committed a federal felony by evading the draft, including those that went to Canada, were given a complete and utter pardon, across the board. They did not even have to know about it. It was just done. Also, Mohamid Ali was given a pardon for his refusal to serve. I think it is time for those that DID make the sacrifice when their country called to get the same treatment.
Recently on fox news there was an article in which a veteran was suing to have his discharge upgraded for just these reasons, so there IS a new interest just beginning
In the early years as the "conflict" was winding down and when, after winning every major engagement we ever were involved in, "we were ordered" to leave with our tail between our legs. We returned to a country that at first were protesting to "bring us home, and for some reason it turned into calling us "Animals, Junkies, and Baby Killers" Anyone that is not a Vietnam Veteran will never completely understand just how much that hurt us. And the ones that have less than honorable discharges are still feeling the prick.
By now everyone has realized that Rambo was a lie and every Vietnam Veteran was not a drug addict or Baby Killer.
Most were nothing like that. Every Veteran I ever met has told me all they wanted was to come home and forget the past and get on with their lives.
But, to have be offered the chance to be back home right away and have the war over with was really an unfair way to clean house. Think of all the money that was saved, by denying these men any entitlement at all to any benefits, or assistance, what-so-ever.
I hope you will get involved with me in my quest and just maybe together we can close another chapter, too long left open, and will stop back to sign the petition when I get it set up. Lets show these guys that we do care.
Thank you and I pray that you will always take the time, not to smell the roses, because they always smell the same, even less as you get older, but to consider yourself and what you would regret should this be your last day, and do something about it. One day, it will be.
